Before you call, it is worth knowing what the consul can actually do: issue a temporary passport and contact your family, but not pay for hospital treatment or arrange an individual evacuation.

What the consul can help with
- Issue a temporary passport after the loss or theft of your document (you need a police report and a photograph).
- Notify your family of hospitalisation or detention and monitor the case; visit a detained person.
- Provide a list of lawyers and medical facilities that accept foreign nationals.
- Help you contact your insurer and with the formalities involved in repatriating remains.
- In the event of a state-organised evacuation, inform those registered in the Odyseusz system.
What the consul will not do
- Pay for treatment, hospital, medication or medical transport. This is the first thing they ask: do you have a policy.
- Arrange an individual evacuation from Ukraine or transport to Poland.
- Get you out of a combat zone or the occupied territories.
- Influence a decision by the Ukrainian border guards to refuse entry.
- Lend money, except in exceptional circumstances and against an undertaking to repay.
Odyseusz: register before you leave
Odyseusz is the free system of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which you enter your dates, destinations and a phone number that works in Ukraine. This lets the consul know where you are and send you a text message with a warning or evacuation information. Registration takes five minutes via a trusted profile (profil zaufany) or e-mail. For Ukraine the Ministry maintains the highest, fourth warning level: "advises against all travel".
